Borken is very active in the field of town twinning. Twinning arrangements with Albertslund in Denmark and Whitstable Twinning Association in England were officially concluded as far back as 1987.

Because Albertslund was then twinned with Mölndal in Sweden and Grabow in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Germany), Borken automatically began to have closer relations with these towns. The relationship between with the town of Bolków in Poland, was founded by former Bolków residents, who had made a new home for themselves here in Borken in 1945.

Borken celebrated the tenth anniversary of its twinning with Albertslund and Whitstable in 1997, with the intention of promoting a 'family of towns' in an ever more unified Europe. A consequence of this was that the twinnings with Bolków and Mölndal were made official. At the same time an Agreement of Friendship was   drawn up with Grabow.

The European MP Hedwig Keppelhoff-Wiechert presented Borken with the Europe Diploma on behalf of the Council of Europe, for conspicuous dedication to the town twinning program.

A further award was presented in the following year. For outstanding efforts in the "Promotion of European unity", Borken was awarded the Flag of Honour by the Council of Europe.

Every year, thousands of visitors travel between Borken and its twinned towns for official and private reasons.
